Who's Behind It

Growing up
on the water.

Vela's founder is a junior in high school who grew up racing on the East Coast. We've watched too many good sails get thrown out the moment they retire from the fleet.

Vela started as a way to keep that cloth out of the landfill. We cut around the wear and sew each piece into a drawstring bag made for daily use.

No two sails wear the same, so every bag is unique.

How a Bag Gets Made

From racing sail to drawstring bag, in four moves.

01 · RETIRED

The sail comes in

Blown out, stretched, or replaced: we take the sails other sailors are done with.

02 · SORTED

We choose the panels

We inspect each panel and mark the strongest cloth.

03 · CUT & SEWN

Built by hand

We cut and stitch each bag on a home sewing machine, one panel at a time.

04 · FINISHED

Drawstring & done

We add the drawstring rope and the Vela label.

Giving Back

10% of our profit goes to Save the Sound.

We grew up on Long Island Sound, and we want it healthy. We donate 10% of the profit from every bag to Save the Sound, which protects and restores the water we sail on. Learn about Save the Sound.
